Blog Topics and Ideas: Where to Get Them?

If you have a blog, you know that sometimes it’s difficult to come up with ideas to write fresh, interesting, and useful content on a continuous or regular basis.

No matter how much you write, or how often, there are always difficulties in getting the words to flow and the muse to always be present.

Here is a list of ideas to write on your blog that will keep you busy all year long 😉

If you want the content of your blog to be shared on social media, and for your community of followers to be active in the comments of the article, try the methods in this post.

1. Answer frequently asked questions

Every time you receive a question in comments, emails, or social media, whether from your current or potential customer, take note for your next post.

This should be your number one source of inspiration, because your post will be geared towards the concerns of your target audience. This way, you will not only satisfy your reader, but also expand your audience and reach people who also had the same questions.

To encourage people to ask their questions, you can launch a survey or a giveaway.

Survey on The English Blog

Example of a method to get feedback for your blog. The English Blog.

2. Use Google suggestions to get ideas

Have you noticed that Google always finishes your sentence by proposing several variations? Type a phrase in the Google search engine that is relevant to your business, and use the information to create new topics or plan new ideas to write on your blog.

Since these are words that have a high search volume, according to the statistics that the search engine itself collects from users.

Google Suggestions to Get Ideas for Writing on the Blog

You can also get ideas from the related searches that appear at the bottom of the Google page:

Google Search Suggestions

Aside from some curious results (how do you learn English while sleeping?), these results are a good source of ideas, and they come directly from Google.

3. Get ideas from the Google Ads Keyword Planner

This powerful tool is originally available for Google Ads users, but it is completely free, and although its main objective is to help us discover search terms for Google Ads campaigns, we can also get a list of related keywords with their search volume.

You must have an active account to see the volumes, otherwise it will show you a range.

4. Use Google Alerts

Google Alerts allow you to receive mentions made on the Internet about your brand, product, or any keyword you set, in your email.

This powerful tool is not only used to monitor online reputation, but also to find opportunities before your competition.

5. Try Hubspot’s Blog Topic Generator

This small tool developed by Hubspot will offer you 250 attractive titles for your blog. Enter 1 to 5 nouns in its bar and press the “Give me blog ideas” button.

Then you can go through the cards in search of your favorite, or simply download the document with all the ideas.

Of course, you will have to translate these titles later.

6. Read your competitor’s blog (and the comments it receives)

The most practical method to overcome your competition is to do the job better than them. In the case of content, read what your competitor writes on their blog, the way they offer information, what style they use when writing, and write on this topic surpassing the utility of the text.

As long as you don’t steal the content, it’s a good way to get inspired. Besides, there will surely be some topic on which your opinion is different.

7. Examine industry forums

Forums are the best place to ask questions, receive answers, create discussions, and exchange ideas. Every blogger has their featured folder with the forums they read. I think you can find forums on any topic, and this can be a good resource for ideas for your blog topics.

Get into your niche’s topic and examine the comments, and create a post based on the information people are commenting on.

For example, ForoBeta, a forum about bloggers, SEO, monetization, and WordPress.

8. Use searches in Google News

It’s a quick way to find posts that appear in the main media of your sector. But since 2014 this application no longer works for Spain, as it is not convenient for Google to have it due to Spanish law, which forces it to pay the publisher whether they want to or not.

More information can be read in the Google help section.

Despite this, we can see the news from other Spanish-speaking countries or also take a look at more popular media from the USA.

9. Share your clients’ success stories

Showing your success stories increases the trust of potential customers towards your website.

Talk to your client to get their confirmation and show their story to the world. It also rewards both parties, you have unique material showing your professional experience, and your client gets brand visibility.

10. Expand old articles, adding fresh information

Analyze your blog and look for the most popular articles. Those articles that attract many visits to your website, and although a long time has passed since their publication, continue to attract interested people.

This content needs to be kept fresh more than any other. Create a follow-up text, add another paragraph, create a renewed version, change what is not current…

For example, in Serpstat I can see the most popular pages of my website, with their number of keywords for which they are positioned in Google, the times they have been shared on Facebook and the potential traffic they can generate.

SERPstat, Top Pages report

The tool can be used for free, with 10 searches per day.

11. Write a review or opinion of a book, product, course, or video you have read or bought

Have you read a book? Have you bought a product? Have you used a new tool? Your opinion on this can be great material for your blog. People like to read opinions, and much more if they are true, since the Internet is full of fake reviews.

12. Get inspired or summarize a conference or event you have attended

Surely it has happened to you to come from an event being very inspired. It’s as if you took home a lot of ideas to write on your blog. Take advantage of it!

For every event you attend, take notes and make posts for your blog. Also, with the ease we have to record and take photos, you can make your content more attractive.

13. Take advantage of your subscriber list: send them surveys, challenges, or contests

If you have a fairly large subscriber list, you can run a contest, or raffle something from your products or services.

With programs like SurveyMonkey and CrowdSignal you can create surveys on your own blog.

People like to participate in raffles, and they are encouraged to do any challenge if it doesn’t require much effort (for example, following an account, liking, or leaving a comment), and if the thing becomes popular and has a good cause, even more people are encouraged to participate.

Remember the famous Ice Bucket Challenge? Well, you can be the author of the next challenge 😉

Besides, these things always attract new visits to the blog.

14. Interview leaders in your sector

Surely you know opinion leaders and experts in your niche, manage to interview them. It’s a good opportunity to expand your followers, as experts usually share their videos with their audience.

You just need to contact them by email or social media and ask if you can do this interview. Then comes the most difficult process, preparing the questions you are going to ask, and tools to record in good quality.

Don’t do the typical interviews about what they are and what they do. Be creative. Don’t waste the expert’s time, or the audience’s time who will watch it later.

15. Subscribe to Feeds

What is an RSS feed? A feed is a file that contains information about content published on the web (weblog).

With this file, you don’t have to subscribe to blogs by email. Simply use feed readers to read these files, choose the blogs to follow, and stay up to date with all the news and updates. And surely from there, you can get some ideas for your future blog articles.

I’ll show you an example of Feedly – an RSS file reader:

Feedly

There are different methods to find out the daily trends. Many times it’s simply entering social media and scrolling the screen.

But to be among the first to spread the news, you can use tools like: Google Trends, Twitter Search, and Reddit.

These tools show what topics are popular now, what most people are reading about at this moment, and what content is being spread on Twitter.

17. Tell your own journey – successes and failures – as a blogger and your future goals

Tell your readers how the blog is going, if it’s possible to live off a blog, if you invoice with your blog, talk about your successes and your failures (who hasn’t had them?).

Surely you have learned something from it. Why not share the lesson with your readers? It’s a good idea to write because it’s the best way to contribute valuable things. For example, you can publish every 6 months, telling how you have evolved.

I know a blogger who does it every month. He tells what it’s like to live off a blog, what plans he has for the next month, and gives figures such as how much he has received from advertising.

Monthly Summary of Living off a Blog (Ruben Alonso)

This will give you motivation to keep doing new things on your blog every month, get interesting data, and surprise your readers. And of course, show that working on a blog is hard and requires brutal effort.

18. Write a guide

The best content is the one that encourages people to read other content on your blog. Linking to other blog articles and taking advantage of this is the real work of internal linking.

Look at old blog articles, and think if you can group them in a logical way creating a guide, that by reading one article after another would provide a lot of value.

Write an introduction, conclusions, and small summaries of each paragraph and insert the links to the posts. This way you will create a guide that will attract people to see other content on the blog and spend more time browsing your page.

19. Launch versions of the articles in other formats: infographics, video, etc.

Multimedia files, such as videos, gifs, infographics, and images, entertain the reader a lot and help them process the information of the content. The truth is that nowadays people read less and less, and if you want to continue with your blog, you have to be attractive and present the text in different formats.

There are also tools to create infographics, generate your own gifs, or convert texts into audios.

Here is a list of free tools to create cool infographics.

20. Write something motivational with inspirational quotes

People need motivation to succeed or to get up from a failure. Use motivational quotes in your next blog post to inspire your reader.

Pinterest can help you find motivating quotes. It’s a free application where you can find ideas for all topics.

Create a board with inspirational quotes and draw from it every month for your motivational post.

21. Create controversy

Having an active audience in the comments of the post is a plus for the positioning of the web page. Many times the article can be positioned by the words that are put in the comments. And of course, you have to watch out for spam comments.

If the post you just launched creates controversy among your audience, this will attract more comments, questions, and opinions. You can leave your opinion on anything and there will be people who think differently.

22. Make lists of articles or bloggers you follow

Create a list of the bloggers you follow. You can call it for example “Best Twitter profiles on…” (write your topic).

Add a paragraph for each blogger explaining why you follow them and what content they publish on their profile.

When you spread the post on social media, tag each mentioned blogger, thus expanding your audience, as these lists are also usually shared by the mentioned bloggers.

For example, as the iebschool blog did.

23. Invite guest writers

Many bloggers and companies seek visibility for their brands. And your blog can be a good place where their content can live. Note, I didn’t say advertising! 😉

It is important that the way your guests promote their brand is interesting and useful for your readers.

Having a guest author on your blog is beneficial for both parties, the author who writes the post gains visibility and a natural link to their website, you gain valuable content and have one less post to write.

Create a post inviting people from your sector to be a guest author on your blog, you can talk about the conditions they must meet, topics to research, etc. You can also explain what a guest post is, how it works, how to find blogs that allow guest authors, etc.

24. Make a summary of the best comments you have received

Collect all the interesting comments you have had on your blog since its existence. If you use a star rating after your posts, you can collect the best-rated content by your readers, and look at the comments there. Based on this data, create a post linking to the best content and showing the nicest comments.

25. Say Thank You

On each anniversary of your blog, or on each important milestone you achieve, thank your audience. It’s a good time to tell your readers that they are important to you and that you respect them.

26. Write a series of Posts

For your followers to be more active when it comes to sharing new posts, participate in their dissemination on social networks, and interact with your website, one of the best ideas is to write a series of articles on a specific topic.

For example, if your niche is related to SEO, you can start a series of Posts explaining different WordPress Plugins for SEO.

27. Make “Top 50..” type lists

Choose a topic related to your blog, and give it a list of free tools, blogs, programs, websites, books, events, etc.

People like to see lists with common tips that make their lives easier.

Also, publishing content in the form of lists works very well in SEO. Since many “Rich Snippets”, or as they are also called “result 0”, the section selected by Google, is created with lists.

Google Result 0

28. Create a glossary

If your niche is very specialized and many people do not understand several terms. Write a glossary with all the expressions and definitions of your topic.

It will be a great help for those who know nothing about your sector.

29. Analyze what’s cooking on Quora

For those who don’t know Quora – it’s a question and answer website. There are many different topics that people ask about every day.

Find what might interest you by entering a keyword in the search bar, and Quora will show you related questions.

The questions can serve as ideas for your post and the comments people leave can be the body of your posts. But don’t use Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V 🙂

You can also write your own answer, and then use it as a draft for your text.

30. Bonus Tip: Use Screaming Frog to find ideas

This is about showing how to find more popular and current ideas for blog articles with the help of a couple of tools: Screaming Frog, Adwords, Excel, and a web browser.

Enter your niche keyword into the Google Keyword Planner tool (Adwords).

Choose the best result and its URL (the result has to contain questions that people ask, ads that people publish, comments, etc.).

Go to the Screaming Frog tool, and its “Custom Extraction” functionality.

I leave you a link to the article to do the process of collecting ideas with Screaming Frog step by step.

Conclusions

I hope that by reading the article you have found some ideas to write on your blog. Tell me in the comments what you liked the most and what idea you want to implement in your next post.

I wish you not to lose inspiration ?
